Freudian Slip

A Freudian slip, also called Para praxis, is an error in speech, memory, or physical action that is interpreted as occurring due to the interference of some unconscious ("dynamically repressed") wish, conflict, or train of thought. The concept is thus part of classical psychoanalysis.
For example: She: 'What would you like - bread and butter, or cake?' He: 'Bed and butter... I mean BREAD!’
Slips of the tongue and the pen are the classic Para praxes, but psychoanalytic theory also embraces such phenomena as misreading’s, mishearing’s, temporary forgetting’s, and the mislaying and losing of objects. In general use, Freudian slip can refer to any accidental verbal slips of the tongue.
This concept is used to describe the return of the repressed, which is commonly used in the horror genre. Freudian slip could give reason for why the main villians and murderers carry out the actions they do - they have been repressing it since childhood and as an adult have the power to carry out such behaviour.

  1. Yes - though I asked you to investigate the idea of "the return of the repressed." Discuss this with me.
